  BIOGRAPHY

 

1978-1982

  • Editor and photographer at Ravan Press in Johannesburg, mainly for the magazine Staffrider but also on many other publications. Involved in the founding of Afrapix photo agency.
  • Worked on the book None But Ourselves: The media and the masses in the making of Zimbabwe, with Julie Frederikse for over two years. This involved interviewing and photographing hundreds of Zimbabweans; researching, collecting and copying illustrative material from many sources and working on the editing and design of the book.

 

1982-1992

  • Moved to Zimbabwe in 1982
  • Press photography for Agence France Press
  • Wrote and photographed regularly for Zimbabwean magazine Moto, and for Upbeat, a magazine for South African youth.
  • Commissioned to make tape-slide shows: on ex-combatant co-operatives, peasant farmers and conservation, alternative technology for rural women.
  • Picture co-ordinator for the magazine SAPEM (Southern African Political and Economic Monthly).
  • Solo exhibition of photographs in Harare
  • Designed and produced a permanent photo-display for Silveira House, a rural development agency
  • Published numerous works, including articles and photos for magazines and books, and a childrens book of black and white pictures, entitled Opposites.

 

In the 90s, shifted emphasis from photography to work with music. Completed two albums, featuring six of her own compositions, with the Afro-jazz band mhepo. Also performed with womens a capella group Big Sister, and taught music in several schools and institutions in Harare.

In 1998, received UN funding to compose and record a song designed to treat the symptoms of HIV-Aids through musical frequencies.

In 1999 moved to London.

1999 2006

  • Music teaching in London : keyboard, choir and saxophone in Brent, Kensington, Southwark
  • Administrative work for Jazz Services

Moving again with photography, getting digital:

  • 2003: completed and screened a video combining the AIDS song with still images of Zimbabwean life in a tribute to the many great musicians lost to HIV/AIDS
  • 2003/4, articles and photographs for Upstart the UK Sure Start magazine
  • 2004: exhibited at St Martins-inthe-Field, Trafalgar Square
  • 2005: exhibited at African Bazaar, Victoria and Albert museum
  • 2005: Zimbabwean images projected onstage at the Queen Elizabeth Hall during Africa Remix performance

New work in London, Hastings, South Africa and France

  • 2006: Images published in the book “Women by women: 50 Years' of Women's Photography in South Africa”, commissioned by the South African Ministry of Culture and published by Witwatersrand University
